Rode VideoMicro Compact On-Camera Microphone with Rycote Lyre Shock Mount

RODE VIDEOMICRO COMPACT ON-CAMERA MICROPHONE

RODE VIDEOMICRO COMPACT ON-CAMERA MICROPHONE. When it comes to shooting video, the quality of your audio is just as important as the quality of your footage. If you’re using a camera with an on-board microphone, you’ll likely get poor sound quality, especially if your subject is more than a few feet away from the camera. This is why it’s important to use separate microphones for recording sound. There are many different types of microphones available, so you can choose the one that best suits your needs. In this blog post, we’ll discuss the Rode VideoMicro Compact On-Camera Microphone with Rycote Lyre Shock Mount. This includes the microphone features and my experience with this Compact Microphone.

This is the cheapest, smallest, lightweight-est, on-camera mic that I currently own. It is great for vlogging, zoom calls, and short distance audio work. It does all this very well, for a pretty decent price. I’d say that’s probably all it’s good for, though.

Please take note:

I bought this mic with my own money. I’m writing an honest review. No one is paying me or sponsoring me for this.

Alright, let’s talk about the RODE VIDEOMICRO COMPACT ON-CAMERA MICROPHONE

The VideoMicro is a tiny, lightweight shotgun microphone perfect for those who shoot on the go like vloggers and even for zoom calls for your laptop, tablet,or phone. It doesn’t have any controls or switches. It’s stupid simple.  It’s extremely lightweight – 1.5 ounces light. It doesn’t use a battery and is powered by the camera plug-in power

Durable and sturdy

The microphone body is made from high-quality aluminum, which aids in RF rejection. It’s finished off in anti-glare sleek black ceramic coating.

RODE’s accessories are always fun

I like the SC4 and SC7 because I can connect the VideoMicro directly to a smartphone or tablet equipped with a 3.5mm TRRS jack. The VXLR+ adapter is the ideal solution when you want to record the VideoMicro to a camcorder or mixer that has XLR inputs.

What do I not like about the Rode VideoMicro?

I don’t know if it’s not working or not

This setup absolutely will not work with a GoPro.

When you are using the microphone, it will be hard for people to even notice that there’s a device nearby. This speaks volumes about how little noise reduction this actually offers and just goes to show what kind of difference poor quality makes in our lives! The sound gets quieter but not necessarily better by any means. It also reduces some outside noises while diminishing your own voice.

Unfortunately, the mic only captures sound in a very narrow direction which means you’ll have to get pretty close for it to work. If you’re talking face-to face with someone then that shouldn’t be much of an issue but anything past 2 – 3 feet and things start getting blurry! It’s also unidirectional rather than omnidirectional so don’t expect miracles if trying to use this during interviews or conferences. Even if it’s omnidirectional, you would still want that it should be able to work for at least 5-6 feet distance, but it does not. It is a big turn off too.

One last thing that may cause inconvenience when using this microphone is that you will need special patch cables (Like your SC7 cable) to connect the smartphone, which is another $15.

All in all, if the unit is not making any noticeable difference, and improving or amplifying the sound; and then it doesn’t even let you go beyond 3 feet, what is even the point of having this microphone at the first place?
